Eight days before DIBX opens in Philadelphia, Gunnison Copper said it had completed the first metallurgical-drilling phase at its flagship project and expanded its planned program to 405 column-leach tests.

Four days earlier, Gunnison had reported first-half cathode production and second-quarter cathode sales from Johnson Camp. Its August 17 update supplied a different kind of progress: 68 column-leach tests in process, 63 flotation tests added and an expected increase from two active rigs to six in September.

Together, the updates make Gunnison easier to evaluate at DIBX. Johnson Camp offers current mine output, finished cathode, sales and a documented path from Nuton copper to planned AWS component use. The Gunnison Project offers a scheduled stream of technical results that could make its future case more specific. Johnson Camp merits a closer sourcing look now. The test program keeps Gunnison relevant to technology and capital leaders as the results arrive.

The 4.1 million pounds put operating evidence first

Production and sales place Johnson Camp beyond a purely development-stage story. Gunnison’s August 13 results reported 2,006,315 pounds of cathode production in the second quarter and 4,112,898 pounds for the first half. They also recorded $13.733 million in second-quarter copper-cathode sales revenue.

Johnson Camp uses leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning to produce finished copper cathode. Gunnison says the SX/EW plant has installed capacity of up to 25 million pounds a year and is targeting commercial production in the third quarter and nameplate rates by year-end.

Those are forward-looking operating targets. By contrast, the first-half total is the achieved result buyers can begin examining now.

Pounds alone do not capture the full operating picture. Gunnison said in July that Johnson Camp was making cathode through two routes: its ROM circuit handles oxide ore, while Nuton bioleaching processes sulfide feed. Rio Tinto says the Nuton process produces 99.99% copper cathode at the mine. It also identifies AWS as the first customer through an agreement spanning two years, with the copper planned for components serving American data centers. Amazon’s own report corroborates the first-customer agreement.

Together, those key details give defense primes and OEMs a concrete starting point: finished cathode, stated purity for the Nuton output, current production at a U.S. mine gate and a named downstream customer with an intended end use. A sourcing team can then ask Gunnison for the assay and lot records, available volume, provenance, delivery terms and conversion route needed to compare the copper with one real component requirement. Whether a particular lot fits that requirement remains a separate qualification question. Johnson Camp gives the question a credible place to begin.

The 405-test program gives attendees a reason to stay engaged

At the Gunnison Project, the more useful figure may be 68, not 405. Four hundred and five is the planned column-leach program; 68 is the portion Gunnison said was already in process. Separating those figures turns a large activity number into progress people can follow.

The program is widening in three directions. Gunnison reported seven completed holes totaling 7,950 feet, added 63 flotation tests and expects to increase the rig count in September. Column-leach work can show how mineralized material responds over time, while the flotation program examines another processing path. The results can sharpen recovery assumptions, process choices and the design of later technical work.

Preliminary program results expected in the fourth quarter of 2026 give the Gunnison Project’s next evidence a date to look out for. The project remains at the preliminary-economic-assessment stage, and full program results are expected in mid-2027. Engineering, technology and capital teams can decide in advance which recovery or process result would change their view.

The program already names the technical work: column-leach response, flotation recovery and independent laboratory analysis. That gives a technology chief executive a specific frame for DIBX. A tool that shortens analysis time, improves measurement resolution or makes results easier to compare can be discussed against a real workstream instead of a generic “mining technology” pitch. A technically serious conversation can begin with what that capability would change.

Why both horizons matter at DIBX

For a defense prime or OEM, the immediate question is whether Johnson Camp’s operating evidence and the announced AWS end-use path deserve a closer sourcing review. No one needs to qualify cathode on the event floor. A useful encounter can stay with the facts that matter first: what Johnson Camp has produced, what records it can provide and which product requirements those records could realistically serve.

Technology leaders have an equally concrete opening. Nuton has already moved from test work into production at Johnson Camp. The flagship program now supplies a second point of entry: explain how a specific tool could improve the speed, resolution or comparability of column-leach, flotation or laboratory work. That lets a technology chief executive discuss a real capability against real work, even before the fourth-quarter results arrive.

Capital providers can focus on a sharper question: would the recovery and process results narrow the technical and cost assumptions that matter most to the flagship project’s risk case? Public officials and consortium staff can treat those same records as stage-specific facts; no formal public process changes.
